- Eagle -
This was the code name given to the lunar lander used in the Apollo 11 mission. This page is dedicated to the Apollo Missions that landed (or attempted to land) on the moon. There is more information on the people involved, as well as the timeline.

July 20, 1969.

On this date, Neil Armstrong exited the lunar lander codenamed "Eagle" and set foot on the moon. With his now famous quote of "One small step for man..." he finally fulfilled the dreams of many of his predecessors who attempted to set foot on the moon. Through the countless hours and millions of dollars spent on the program, the United States had the goal of reaching this height of achievement because, in the words of John F. Kennedy, "It is there." While Apollo missions went from 1 to 17, there were not 17 missions to the moon. In fact, it wasn't until Apollo 11 landed that a person set foot on it, and several of the missions after the tragic fire on Apollo 1 were unmanned. To explore more information about the various Apollo missions, please see the people page and the timeline on the home page.

There were several Apollo Missions that successfully landed on the moon:

  • Apollo 11
  • Apollo 12
  • Apollo 14
  • Apollo 15
  • Apollo 16
  • Apollo 17

[note] Apollo 13, while bound for the moon, suffered an explosion of an oxygen tank and was forced to abort its moon landing. See the timeline or the movie that was based on this turn of events.
